MegaJoist
Frequently Asked Questions
Transcon Steel has compiled a list of some of most commonly asked questions from owners, designers, and builders whom are investigating the use of MegaJoist for their upcoming projects.
1. How does the open-web punch of MegaJoist impact its overall strength?
Each time metal is rolled, it becomes stronger. The art of MegaJoist is the design of providing a continually reinforced "web" that increases the joist's overall resistance to bending stress. The design is equivalent to the structural properties that a floor truss provides.
2. What are other benefits of the "Open Web" design?
Mega Joist delivers the solution to on-site construction difficulties of plumbing, electrical, and mechanical installation. With the continuous open web design, all trades can easily install their utility requirements without concern to structural failure, save money through a more direct utility run, and leave plenty of space for future utility service.
3. Metal is usually a louder floor system, how is MegaJoist different?
Solid web members, either wood or metal, create "chambers" in the floor system. When an impact is created on an upper floor condition, noise is trapped in the chamber creating a "boom" effect. With MegaJoist, the open-web design allows for noise to affectively transfer throughout the floor system reducing the boom effect in multi-level construction; producing a quieter floor system.
4. How are the joists installed?
MegaJoist can be used in both platform and balloon framing. The installation is easier that wood and other metal systems. Because of the nature of steel, MegaJoist requires no shimming, is lighter weight, and exact in all dimensions. Install the end track, mark the spacing between joist, then fasten the joist to the end track on top and bottom. Bracing is then ran in the joist openings every eight (8') feet on center.
5. Can MegaJoist be used in fire rated assemblies?
Yes, simply follow Underwriters Laboratory (or any other approved testing authorities) requirements to fire rated assemblies. Fire testing documents can be found in the testing section of the MegaJoist pages on this website.
